About Michael Rogers

Michael RogersMichael Rogers has been a design, building and operations executive for over 40 years. Rogers provides building expertise and program leadership for residential and institutions in design, architecture, construction, operations and resilience advising.

For the past 25 years Rogers was the director of facilities at the J. Paul Getty Trust; the world’s largest cultural and philanthropic organization dedicated to the visual arts.  As the owner, Rogers’ leadership and portfolio was extensive including two world-renowned facilities – Getty Center and Getty Villa both in Los Angeles.

Operations

Rogers led Getty’s architecture, events, food, support services and grounds/gardens. His best-in-class high performing operations team provided outstanding visitor experience for over 2.5 million guests annually. With nearly 500 staff and contractors, Rogers oversaw the day-to-day operations of “making Getty shine”.

Real Estate, Planning and Projects

Outside of the visitor experience, Rogers led real estate acquisitions, building programs, capital projects, design, strategic planning and space management. His work covered over a thousand projects from purchasing properties, housing, exhibition space, art and library collections, modernization of the central plant to relocation of the  I-405 freeway and planning a mass-transit stop; all were successfully planned and executed or are in process.  Further he developed a 20-year strategic space plan to align with institutional visioning.

Property Care, Planning and Forecasting

Rogers provided oversight of engineering and maintenance including care of the sites and renewal for the iconic Getty campuses.   He instituted a 50-year capital renewal plan along with long-range modeling to predict financial and property renewal needs to support collections, content, engineering and projects throughout the 800-acre 2.5 million square foot Getty estate. 

Government and Community Affairs

Rogers provided oversight of local, national and international relationships with government and fostered strong community relationships. Over the years many events and gatherings were hosted from institutional advancement, community engagement to private venues and Heads of State visits.  In 2022, Rogers hosted the private Summit of the Americas Heads of State meeting and dinner for President Biden.

Resilience and Climate Change

Rogers created emergency protocols and resilience programs for hundreds of projects to harden Getty facilities from catastrophic events such as fire, earthquake, floods and climate change. He oversaw preventive measures that were successful in protecting Getty Villa during the devasting 2025 Palisades Fire. These same measures protected the Brentwood community and Getty Center during, and in the aftermath of the Getty Fire of 2019, which was started off property. 

Rogers served on the board of the International Association of Museum Facilities Administrators (IAMFA) and is a member of the American Institute of Architects. Rogers holds a Master of Architecture and a BA in Art History. He is a licensed architect in California, Montana, Wyoming and Idaho.  He is a licensed general building contractor in California.  He currently resides in southwest Montana.
